The world is changing fast. Very very fast. We might not notice it in our surroundings but it is going on. Silently and Rapidly
The Internet, our gadgets- smartphones, tablets, laptops and technology are at the helm of this change.
10 years ago we were living in a very different world. We could only watch what was available on the television, only read what was available in the newspapers.
In other words, we didn’t have control over the content we consumed. The content was not personalized and it was seldom targeted to a specific audience.
That is no longer the case today. Now we can totally personalise the content we consume. We can seek knowledge on whatever topic that interests us.
If I want to learn how the human mind works, I can do it. If I want to learn how the human body works, I can do it. If I want to know the history of humanity I can do it. If I want to know the meaning of any word in the world, I can do it, instantly, just by looking it up on the Internet.
This is unprecedented in human history. This is why I love my life so much. This is why I thank God every day for sending me during this remarkable era of The Information age.
And it is dirt cheap. It wasn’t like this until a year ago. But today I can definitely say that it is dirt cheap thanks to Jio and Mukesh Ambani. We owe him a lot (at least I do).
The quality of information on the Internet is improving day by day just as much as the cost of Internet is going down.
I firmly believe that the current schooling and college system will soon become obsolete or at least they will have to be radically transformed. Degrees will become less and less valuable.
The reason why degrees are valuable today is that employers employ people based on that. They take degrees as a proxy that a particular student has required talents essential for a particular job title.
But nowadays degrees aren’t the only medium through which employers can assess a candidate’s talent.
There are YouTube videos, blogs, articles, Facebook profiles, Twitter profiles, social media comments. This information is out there in the world for anyone to see not just employers. Anyone can see your Facebook profile, anyone can watch your YouTube videos and anyone can read your articles. Anyone out there can guess what kind of person you are and what skills and talents you might possess.
On the top of that, there are online job sites like Fiverr and upwork where any employer can see the work of any individual and if found adequate hire them.
I want to ask you this question- If employers stopped hiring candidates primarily on the basis of degrees wouldn’t the value of a degree go down??
In my opinion, it surely would.
Charles Darwin once said “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most adaptable to change”
I hope it makes sense what I am trying to convey here. We’re going through a massive change and I believe in being prepared for it.
Good article, i must admit…. And yes we all owe a lot to Jio…. ๐
Thank you so much Padmini. I am sure Jio is going to bring us more exciting offers in the future. ๐
