About Fear and giving credits

Posted by

So today is the first day of my 7 day challenge. There you go. I just wrote one sentence and thus succeeded in writing and most importantly showing up today.

I really want to create, you know. It is pleasurable to me. Feels good after writing. Even though I don’t write anything meaningful, it still feels pretty good.

Even if nobody reads it, it still feels pretty good.

I think it is not something that just I feel. Writing is a magical thing. It would provide the same kind of pleasure to anyone willing to take the road.

Despite this knowledge, most people fear writing. Despite this knowledge I fear writing.

I read the book Big Magic about 2 years ago. And I have recently been reading bits of it here and there.

The author starts the book with the section named “Courage”. It seems that fear is the biggest obstacle everyone faces when trying to create anything. Whether writing an article, creating a video, having an opinion, anything.

Let me share what kind of fear I struggle with often.

I struggle with the fear of not being original. The fear of stealing ideas from others. The fear of not giving credits to others.

The author talks about this too in her book. And in fact in her interview with Marie Forleo, she says that “Even Shakespeare and Beethoven stole ideas from people who lived before them. We are all responding to each other. We are all borrowing ideas from each other.”

She goes on to say “We humans have very inquisitive nature and we have about 40,000 years of art and pretty much everything has been done. But……it has not yet been done by you.”

Then Marie tells her about this video Everything is a remix. which is awesome and speaks about the same idea.

Even Seth godin says “you should steal ideas from others and not to worry about apologizing”

So yeah that is often my biggest fear in writing or creating something and I am glad that she talks about it and gives a solution.

Now about giving credits to others I would again refer to her book.

She talks about “Multiple Discoveries” in the Enchantment section of her book.

She says that ideas are floating creatures having no ownership and basically two people can and often do discover or write about the same idea without ever knowing each other’s work.

She even tells about her own experience of multiple discoveries about building highways in the Amazon jungle.

I am talking too much about the book. It is just amazing. Go Buy and read the book for the complete story.

So, anyways, that was my biggest fear. Now despite that I would continue to write. Or at-least try to write.

Day 1 Challenge Completed!!

Bye!

  1. Wow Ankur…. Loved your article…. And yes the whole world functions on a give-and-take basis, and no one really owns anything….. It’s just that he/she is possessing it for sometime, but hey, every possession is a temporary one…. So no one really owns anything in the field of art and thoughts, it’s just their signature that they own……

    1. Absolutely Yash! Loved your way of connecting the idea this way. Each of us can tell the same story in a different way. That is what matters.
